This course offers students an introduction to many of the key themes that have influenced artists throughout history: power, identity, spirituality, and trade. Through close looking and group discussion, students will learn how to analyze and interpret artistic masterpieces from many cultures and time periods. From mummies to Mexican murals and beyond, we will discuss how art can relate to our own contemporary lives. Not your typical art history course, “Themes in Art History” will provide exciting opportunities to experience art in person and to learn about careers in the arts through field trips to local museums and artists’ studios.
